Out on the Plain

A drive across the lower part of the Salisbury plain and early summer’s evening delivering Barrel Organ brought mixed rewards.  Driving of course meant that amongst those rewards beer did not feature.  However the scenery was superb and amongst the highlights were a Hare racing ahead of me and later a solitary kite swooping low over a hedge.

I dropped a few copies of Barrel Organ in as I passed The Packhorse at Larkhill which still has no real ale and is the least inviting pub on the whole patch.  The Plume of Feathers at Shrewton and the Rose and Crown at Tilshead both kept their LocAle accreditation and both were populated by very friendly and communicative groups.  I noted that the Rose and Crown as well as 6X now also has Piston Broke from Box as a regular pump.  In both places I picked up news that the King’s Head Chitterne had been closed for a few weeks and that proved to be the case.  I was also told that the George at Shrewton is open but has no alcohol licence, not a lot of joy there then. The Solstice rise Winterbourne Stoke was quiet despite the volume of passing traffic.  Final call of the evening was The Boot at Berwick St James which, as ever, was busy and full of wonderful food aromas.

The only real change therefore is the closure of the King’s Head which the licensee has been trying to sell for over 2 years now.
