SOMER'S SPORTS & SOCIAL CLUB WINS 'CLUB OF THE YEAR' AWARD FOR THE SECOND TIME IN A ROW Halesowen club named Britain's Best Real Ale Club again! Issued: Wednesday 10th April 2002 Somer's Sports & Social Club, based in Halesowen, has been named Britain's Best Real Ale Club in the prestigious CAMRA 'Club of the Year' competition for the second year in a row! Great Britain has approximately 30,000 licensed and registered clubs that could have entered this competition and were judged on a wide range of aspects including, of course, the choice and variety of real ale available to the members. The club is located on the edge of Halesowen in a former mansion house. The extensive grounds have football pitches, tennis courts and a bowling green. The beer range is enormous, with 12 real ales at least being available. Internally, the club consists of an attractive lounge-bar with alcove areas, snooker room and function room. Peter Russell, Somer's Sports & Social club steward for over 25 years said, "Both myself and wife Brenda are delighted to have won CAMRA's top club award for the second time in a row. We would again like to thank all of our 4000 members for their support. We believe it is important to offer our members a wide choice of quality real ale and pride ourselves in providing many local and other guest beers from far and wide." The club is very popular due to its warm, friendly atmosphere and has demonstrated great commitment to real ale over many years."
